Pirates of the Caribbean Star Wars Smallville X-Men |
IntroductionSlash, het, and gen, the works. I watch TV, thus I read fic about it. Fandoms: Andromeda, Daria, Firefly, Highlander, Scrubs, and Star Trek: Voyager. See also Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Smallville recs. AndromedaCity in the Clouds, by Basingstoke, lends me new appreciation for Harper, and character I wasn't very interested in when I watched the show, and shows him interacting with Tyr believeably. It's oddly sweet, while remaining in character. Harper grinned into Tyr's thigh. "I feel all warm and fuzzy. Of course, that could be the liquor." (Tyr/Harper, I think) DariaI confess I've never actually been able to see Daria, what with the lack of MTV in my house and the lack of TV, period, in my dorm room. But I have read the spinoff comic books (if they can be called that), from which I have learned that I really need to see the show sometime. In the mean time, I content myself with Jane/Daria fic. Full of Woe, by Christine CGB, has a sense of dissociation and loneliness that gets to me, and words unsaid are always intrigung. (Jane/Daria) FireflyI'm not sure kirby crow's Dancing Lessons entirely works for me, but it's close enough that it doesn't really matter, and I haven't seen the full show yet. Simon is in Denial. Cute, snarky, and hot. "My ass is not little." In The Before, also by kirby crow, is largely from River's point of view, bittersweet and rather odd. I don't really have a good idea of River's character yet, but I like this. Simon is like Persephone bone china. It looks like the most fragile, delicate porcelain ever made, but you can't break it with a sledgehammer. (Simon/Jayne) Ana's Feather Stitch is a deftly done look at Inara and Kaylee's relationship, through silk, with a lovely, ambiguous ending. It's rare that Inara is uncertain what to say. It's true that she chooses her clients carefully, but even so, it's uncommon to be put in a situation where her role, her actions, her words are not scripted out to some degree. (Inara/Kaylee) In An Ordinary Day, by Ana, Simon wakes up gay. Quelle surprise. Simon realised that today he'd woken up feeling slightly suicidal. It was the only explanation he could think of for engaging Jayne in a conversation. "Hi. So, um, how are your weapons?" (Simon/Jayne) Highlander (TV)Once Upon a Time, by Jacquez, is about a pairing rarely written, and even more rarely written with such dark beauty and perfect plausibility. (Kronos/Methos) ScrubsI have a small, odd weakness for JD/Dr. Cox, but Michelle K.'s Theories is the first fic I've seen that successfully explores that subtext, in my opinion. JD is very much in character, matter-of-fact and a bit silly, but not soppy. There are questions, but no answers. (JD/Dr. Cox) Star Trek: VoyagerSometimes More Sweetly, by Ellen Milholland, really works for me, possibly because it doesn't work for Janeway and Seven. (Kathryn Janeway/Seven of Nine) |
