IntroductionSlash, het, gen, the works. I confess it, I started reading fic because of the movies, and while I like the books, I am not even close to being a purist. Legolas/GimliThrown, by Halrloprillalar has almost courtly banter between Legolas and Gimli, plus betting, and friendly wrestling, and it's wonderfully sweet. And another Bill the Pony rec: Of Horses and Herons has banter and UST and other nice things like that. Gimli/ÉowynSo, my cohort in mayhem, afrai, is slowly turning me into a 'shipper, or something of the sort. More precisely, a Legolas/Gimli, Gimli/Éowyn, weird love triangles 'shipper. I'm not sure whether to thank her to be ashamed. Anyhow, Bill the Pony's Wineðearfinde combines three of my favorite things into one story: warriors before battle, substitute sex, and Éowyn. The dialogue, the interplay between Gimli and Éowyn -- just, mmmm. Éowyn/FaramirHealing, by jenelin, is about just that. Éowyn, Faramir, and perhaps a new beginning. Beautifully understated, as jenelin's writing is wont to be. Boromir/FaramirFrom the Other River Bank, by the incomparable Dwimordene, who stays as close to Tolkien's style as possible while dealing with issues Tolkien most certainly would not have. Her writing is rich and complex, and deals with its subject matter delicately and sympathetically. This is not your fluffy incest fic. MultipairingBerry, Blossom, Ice, by Barbara, is a beautiful and deftly done look at Aragorn's relationships with Arwen and Boromir. The fragrance of blossom and berry ripened around them, and for a time there was no doubt in Aragorn's heart. (Aragorn/Arwen, Aragorn/Boromir) The One Ring ChallengeThe One Ring Challenge starts with the simple premise of "What if [insert character of your choice] has the ring?" I think it's the quality of myth about many of the stories that attracts me most; these are the ones I like best: Kate Bolin's ...I Thee Wed is about Rosie Cotton and Sam and their children. And it's damned creepy, in a very good way. Interesting speculation on what the Ring's effects would be in such a situation. (Sam/Rosie) Yasmin M.'s The White Ladies of Rohan is a beautiful, chilling myth about Éowyn taking the Ring, with a very oral tradition feel to it. (gen) In the Shape of a Circle of Gold, by the elfie, is a different, softer look at Éowyn taking the Ring, but there's still a vaguely ominous note to it. (gen) Bauble, by Hope, is about Grima "finding" the Ring. Cold, nasty, and very unpleasant, but compelling. (gen, very dark) Gen and humorKielle's Grey And Pale Gold has young Éowyn and Éomer -- the portrait of their bonds, of Theoden's love for his remaining family, of Eowyn's realization that her mother is dead -- lovely. (gen) Also by Kielle, Red Day Rising is a skillfully interwoven story of Éomer and Theodred. And honestly, until I reread the books, I can't make more intelligent commentary than that, but it's good and I like it. I'm such a bad LOTR fan. (gen) Kielle has also written my favorite LOTR humor thus far: Nine Men And A Little Lady and Blood And Warm Blankets. The first is a delightful parody of everyone's favorite Tenth Walker, Mary Sue, with the perfect ending. The second is a send-up of LOTR slash cliches and also terribly funny, but not very describeable, at least not without spoiling it. (humor) |
