IntroductionSlash, het, gen, Biblefic, the works. Because I somehow never got any of those "ew, litfic" hangups, and I love books and I love lit-based fanfiction. Fandoms: Arthurian Legends/The Mists of Avalon, the Bible, Guy Gavriel Kay novels, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. See also Good Omens recs. Arthurian Legends/The Mists of AvalonL'amour d'Arthur, by AntigoneLupa is a lovely Arthurian story. Bittersweet, with beautiful imagery. "No, my lord," he answers, voice strained, "You are a good Christian king." (Arthur/Lancelet) Bible[To be perfectly honest, I find Bible fic rather uncomfortable. But I have read some and enjoyed it. Very few of my lines are etched in stone.] In Principio, by Thamiris is a gorgeous, lyrical revisioning of Creation. It's too well-written not to recommend, my personal discomfort with the concept aside. Please keep in mind your personal boundaries before reading. (God/Lucifer) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the GalaxyInspired by afrai's Reasons, Daegaer wrote the equally fabulous and funny Not Exactly the Galaxy's Greatest Romance. Poor miserable, desperate Arthur, talking and talking. Ford is really a devious bugger, isn't he? "And you said 'Thank God, when do we leave?' And you also said, 'Hang on, does this mean I have to be your love-slave?' And I said 'Yes, please. I'd really like that, Arthur'?" (Ford/Arthur) So, I have a thing for Ford/Arthur. It's wrong, I know, and I feel vaguely guilty about that. But afrai, wonderful cohort in mayhem that she is, wrote me birthday fic anyway. Fic for my birthday, that is, not fic about birthdays. Reasons is wonderful and clever and snarky, perfectly characterized and oddly sexy, and it has tea in it. The mating call of the Ford Prefect is a wondrous thing to hear. And this is why afrai is my cohort in mayhem. (Ford/Arthur) Then there's the perennial Ford/Arthur rec (of course there are now, what, four F/A fics which aren't pure farce?): Halrloprillalar and Laura Shapiro's More Things in Heaven and Earth, which manages to be funny and hot, whilst retaining the elusive Ford-and-Arthurness of everything. Wow, I sound pretentious; this is because I suck at recs. Great fic, go read it. The illustrated version is here and is entirely wonderful and adds a whole new layer to the fic. Pictures, y'know. (Ford/Arthur) Elvichar's Six by Nine is wicked cute, in various senses of the term, and confused Arthur is just too adorable for words. Arthur's line about panicking is priceless. (Ford/Arthur) Elderberry Whine, by Zoe Rayne, is worth it simply for the last line. Aside from that, it's funny and bizarrely cute throughout, and worth it for the preceding parts, too. (Ford/Arthur) Guy Gavriel Kay[I am ashamed to admit that, despite much badgering on certain people's parts, I have not yet managed to finish a book. But I will, and I like what I've read so far, so I'm recommending fic anyway, recs to be amended later, once I've reread.] Our hands, by Gail, is absolutely beautiful, and far too short. We do with our hands what we cannot say. (Tigana, Alessan/Baerd) Amara's A Sema for Friendship is gorgeous, lyrical, and very in-character. "Do not claim my friendship, Rodrigo. It has proven dangerous." Ammar paused. "One does not use that word of kings, yet Almalik was the only person I could have called a friend in the world." (Ammar ibn Khairan/Rodrigo Belmonte) |
